This article begins with a basic description of how optical design software and illumination and straylight software differ in approach. The text then progresses rapidly describing some of the key features of optical design software, and ending with how one software code approaches some of these features. In order to be brief, the discussion is simplified as much as possible and only a small subset of optical topics is discussed.
