本文以南齊顏之推及其《顏氏家訓》為例,說明中國古代士族門第如何看待數學。事實上,顏之推固然擔心非顯士族之六藝才能被勳貴所役使,不過,他對學習數學的態度,顯然還是傳統儒家的基調。以此對照祖沖之、祖暅對待數學知識的看法,我們或許比較容易理解何以他們父子更加熱切期待《大明曆》的頒佈使用。

英文摘要

This article is devoted to explaining how ancient Chinese literati family perceived mathematics using Yan Zhitui and his Yan Shi Jia Xun (Clan Education of Yan Family) as example. While Yan Zhitui's major concern was how the competency of six arts of the literati family was taken advantage by the noble family, his viewpoint towards mathematics followed however the Confucian tradition, i.e., mathematics itself is only one of the six inferior arts. Viewed in this context of how Zu Chongzhi and Zu Geng (father and son) regarded their own notable mathematical accomplishment as by modern standard, one would better understand why the father and son were more concerned with whether the father's Da Ming Calendar was put into practice.
