本文分析美國華文文學黑人角色的形象、以其與華人移民角色的互動，從而推證美國華文文學批評應重估「美國華人身份／屬性」、「中國性」等易陷本質主義的觀念，並以較為唯物的觀點，把中國移民置入美國多元族裔的環境，審視華人身份與其他族裔身份不可分割的「同步建構」過程，以及華人身份交涉中涵蓋性別、階級等的複雜性。第一部份透過美國種族歷史與「種族三角化」理論，指出美國華文作家往往在「黃黑一家」與「黃黑殊途」意念間徘徊。第二部份細讀一些1940至1990年代間有描寫「黃黑交集」的短篇小說，作者包括湘槎、百非、白先勇、叢甦、施叔青、和老南。結論針對美國華文文學歸類問題，重申亞美文學批評傳統的重要性。
