Professor Yang Yun-ping (1906~2000) taught at the department of history of NTU for 40 years, and was the first to deliver a Taiwan history course at the university after retrocession. Though he was fond of literature and did not have a background in historical research, he inherited Lien Heng's (連橫) and Lin Hsien-t'ang's (林獻堂) historiography. He illuminated the climate of Taiwan historical research before and after the martial law was lifted. His conversion was according to the shift of the times. At the end of the Japanese colonial period, Taiwan was under a wartime system. Though in the border area of the Japanese Empire, it had to support the war effort, even to become a battlefront. As a Taiwanese, Professor Yang could neither not assist in the war effort affirmatively, nor oppose the war directly. The only way for him was to be steeped in Taiwan historical research. Moreover, he wrote an article in the Taiwan Daily News (《臺灣日日新報》) to appeal to the Taihoku Imperial University to enhance Taiwan research. He devoted himself to journalism after the World War II. He commented on current affairs, appealed to recapture our own language and stepped into the historiography of Taiwan history actively. In the meantime, he held the post of Senior Researcher and Director of the Research Department at the Institute of Compilation and Translating of Taiwan Province. After the 228 incident, the institute was closed, and he became a professor in the department of history at NTU. He taught courses on South Ming History, Taiwan History, Selected Japanese Readings in Taiwan History. He supervised graduate students to write master theses and doctorial dissertations, too. His masterpieces include: Taiwan Historical Personages (《臺灣史上的人物》), Studies in South Ming History and Taiwan Culture (《南明研究與臺灣文化》). He studied the poems and biographies of classical poets, and commented on historical characters objectively. This was the precious heritage he left for the Taiwan historical research. |
