The flipped classroom has been deemed one of the most effective methods in boosting teaching quality. The purpose of this study was to explore how a flipped classroom affects the learning performance of students. This study used mixed methods to collect both qualitative and quantitative data. The results indicated that students performed well overall in the flipped photography classroom. They achieved high standards in cognitive thinking as well as creative expression, and felt highly satisfied with the course. In addition, the results also showed that the flipped classroom (1) enhanced students' knowledge absorption, learning efficiency and class participation; (2) increased students' practice opportunities and enhanced their sense of creativity and high-level ability; (3) improved students' self-regulated learning ability and learning responsibility; (4) enhanced students' appreciation for teamwork and collaboration; (5) strengthened the connection between theory and practice; and (6) encouraged in-depth thinking about the nature of photography and improved the quality of their works. This study is expected to provide a reference for research on the application of flipped classrooms in art education.
