過去二十年來,國內外研究皆已證實自我決策(Self-determination)能力為身心障礙者未來獨立生活中不可或缺的要素之一。然而大多數文獻還是以轉銜階段以及學齡後的兒童為主要的研究對象,直到最近國外學者漸漸開始將研究對象轉向學齡前的特殊需求幼兒。由於自我決策為成功轉銜的核心能力,幼兒階段更是此技能發展的關鍵時期,本文將從理論以及實務面探討自我決策對特殊需求幼兒的重要性。此外,對於幼兒而言,家長更是其自我決策技巧培訓過程中的促進者,因此,本文提倡成功的親師合作關係以有效促進特殊需求幼兒此能力的發展。
