The main objective of this work is to present the fundamental aspects associated with the design and development of a medical device to assist in the diagnosis of ankle articulation pathologies. The motivation for this investigation came from the lack of reliable mechanical systems that permit the quantification of the different motions described at the human ankle articulation. For this, a complete characterization of the fundamental issues related to the ankle joint is presented. Then, the central technical specifications are analyzed and discussed with the purpose to design and develop a medical device to help in the diagnosis of ankle pathologies. The proposed solution can also be associated with the conventional physical evaluation and imaging exams. Finally, the performance of the medical device model proposed here is analyzed in light of the assumptions and procedure adopted in this work, being the early results quite satisfactory.
